The geology degree program at the University of Houston-Downtown is only a few years old, but is rapidly expanding. In addition to our growing faculty pool and course offerings, UH-D also provides rare opportunities for undergraduates to participate in active research. Field camps, class field trips, and faculty research trips involving students have traveled to the Texas Hill Country near Llano, Big Bend National Park, the Rocky Mountains of South-Central Colorado, the Colorado Plateau of Arizona and Utah, and the Blue Mountains of Oregon and Idaho.

Enchanted Rock, Spring 2017

Enchanted Rock is an enormous Precambrian granite batholith located in the Llano Uplift near Austin.

Ute Trail neat Calumet Mountain, Summer 2017

We conduct our summer field camp in the Mosquito Range of Colorado. Here, we inspect the contact between the Cretaceous Whitehorn Stock and heavily metamorphosed Paleozoic clastic sedimentary rocks along Ute Trail near Calumet Mountain.

Maroon Formation along Highway 50, Summer 2017

These Pennsylvanian conglomeratic sandstones were deposited near the Ancestral Rocky Mountains, a mountain range pushed up in central Colorado at the end of the Paleozoic Era. The Maroon Formation is composed of rock fragments containing abundant feldspar, quartz, and muscovite shed off eroding granite outcrops making up the mountains.
